The Emergency Response Special Interest Group (ER SIG) consists of Sports Section members who are invested in training Physical Therapists interested in acute sports medicine coverage.  Historically, the Emergency Response Course (ERC),  run through the Sports Section, has been developed from the American Red Cross ERC.  The ERC is a course that requires 48-53 hours of lecture/lab, including management of traumatic injuries, identification and management of general medical conditions, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.  The certification for ERC is good for 3 years and the certification for CPR for the Professional Rescuer is now good for 2 years.  Due to the nature of educational background in physical therapy curricula, the ERC run through the Sports Section has additional emphasis on acute care management from what the American Red Cross includes in their course.  At the current time, successful completion of the ERC is a prerequisite to eligibility to sit for the ABPTS Sports Physical Therapy Specialist Certification (SCS) examination.  Many Sports Physical Therapy Residency Programs use the ERC as a content source for the didatic portion of their acute care management curriculum.

Emergency Response SIG Goals:
